Brian Platte Receives Xplor Lifetime Achievement Award

Xplor International created a new award, the Xplor Lifetime Achievement Award, to honor Brian Platte, formerly an InfoPrint Solutions Company Senior Technical Staff Member.

Miami, FL. March 2, 2007 – Xplor International created a new award, the Xplor Lifetime Achievement Award, to honor Brian Platte, formerly an InfoPrint Solutions Company Senior Technical Staff Member. At the 2007 meeting in Miami, Platte's wife, Phylecia Platte, accepted the award on his behalf. Xplor recognized Platte for his significant impact on the direction, growth and progress of the electronic document industry. An advocate of Xplor and the industry, Platte broke through many boundaries of digital output with innovations such as Advanced Function Presentation™ (AFP™) architecture. One of the original patent holders for AFP, Platte is known within the industry as the father of AFP. In a surprise announcement during the presentation ceremony, Skip Henk, President of Xplor, told the audience that Xplor has renamed its Lifetime Achievement Award the Brian Platte Lifetime Achievement Award to perpetuate the memory of Platte and his contributions.

Platte was instrumental in bringing AFP to market in 1984. Customers wanted to move printing closer to the output devices, which meant that the host computer had to be able to communicate with smaller, slower printers asynchronously. Historically, high-speed printers were attached directly to the computer synchronously. Platte envisioned host-printer communication as water flowing through a hose – the data should be independent of the communication channel. This kind of creative thinking led to the development of one of the industry's premier print languages that works seamlessly with high-speed printers and enables page-level error recovery.

The visionary Platte focused on solving customer problems and designing solutions to meet customer requirements for distributed printing. His goal was simple, yet his brainchild AFP turned out to be a breakthrough use of technology for printing, archiving, retrieving and viewing of documents. Platte passed away suddenly in December 2006. During the acceptance speech, Phylecia Platte thanked Xplor and commented on how much her husband valued his relationship with customers. On behalf of InfoPrint Solutions Company, Reinhard Hohensee vowed to keep AFP vital through the work of the AFP Color Consortium.

Skip Henk, President of Xplor, presented the award. Phylecia Platte, Brian Platte's wife, accepted the award. Reinhard Hohensee, InfoPrint Solutions Company Distinguished Engineer and currently head of the AFP Color Consortium, is one of the InfoPrint Solutions Company patent holders on the AFP architecture along with Brian Platte.
