InfoPrint Manager How It Works
InfoPrint® Manager is an enterprise output management (EOM) application that runs on an AIX® or a Windows® server. It consists of a number of system components, or objects, that control the processing of jobs through the system and send output to a target destination. The target destination can be a printer, a fax device, an e-mail address, or another downstream server. Objects include logical destinations to which jobs are submitted, and job default attributes and characteristics are applied if necessary. Logical destinations also can be used to enable printer pooling for workload balancing, which can be very important in optimizing system performance. Then, jobs are sent to a queue associated with that logical destination. A logical destination can be associated with one or more queues. The queue routes the jobs to the actual destination, which is usually a printer. These objects are configured and managed by the Server Administrator to optimize the management and performance of InfoPrint Manager. Although there are other ways of configuring the print flow, this is the most typical one.
InfoPrint Manager includes integrated data stream transforms. These are called automatically if the format of a job submitted to the system does not match the data stream capabilities of the target device (actual destination). Integrated transforms include PCL, Adobe® PostScript® and PDF to Advanced Function Presentation (AFP). SAP (OTF and ABAP formats) to AFP is an optional feature of InfoPrint Manager. Separate programs also can be licensed and integrated with InfoPrint Manager to convert legacy Xerox LPS/Metacode data and resources into AFP, or to convert AFP into PDF.
In addition, InfoPrint Manager includes a component that allows AFP jobs to be converted into PCL for printing. This component is not exactly a transform and may have some limitations for certain application data content.
After a job is sent to the target device, depending upon which output system is used, for example, the PSF output system for driving Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) printers, or another output system for non-IPDS printers, InfoPrint Manager receives information on job completion, number of pages, error conditions, etc., and records this information into logs on the server. These logs can be used to diagnose errors, to provide accounting information for user or department chargeback, or to provide an audit trail of a job for regulatory compliance.
